Open Bike Shelters

An open bike shelter, also called a covered bike shelter, provides durable protection from rain and sun while ensuring simple, fluid access. It is the most widely used solution for creating an outdoor bike parking area at businesses, municipalities, or co-ops—offering rapid deployment and controlled budgeting.

Sizing

What bike shelter size should you plan?

The right size is not only about bike count: spacing, circulation, cargo bikes, e-bikes, and future growth also matter.

Capacity Single-tier
(U-shaped racks)
Double-tier
(double-tier rack)
8 bikes 4 m × 2,5 m 2,5 m × 2,5 m
10 bikes 5 m × 2,5 m 4 m × 2,5 m
12 bikes 6 m × 2,5 m 4 m × 2,5 m
14 bikes 7 m × 2,5 m 4 m × 2,5 m
16 bikes 8 m × 2,5 m 4 m × 2,5 m
18 bikes 9 m × 2,5 m 5 m × 2,5 m
20 bikes 9 m × 2,5 m 5 m × 2,5 m
22 bikes 10 m × 2,5 m 5 m × 2,5 m
24 bikes 11 m × 2,5 m 6 m × 2,5 m
26 bikes 12 m × 2,5 m 6 m × 2,5 m
28 bikes 13 m × 2,5 m 7 m × 2,5 m
30 bikes 13 m × 2,5 m 7 m × 2,5 m

For enclosed shelters, a 6 m depth can double capacity with parking on both sides, provided the aisle remains truly usable.

Before choosing a model

  • Count today’s bikes, then add room for growth.
  • Identify special bikes: e-bikes, cargo bikes, longtails, children’s bikes.
  • Check circulation width, not only shelter length.
  • Choose the racks before freezing the final dimensions.
Cladding and materials

How to choose bike shelter cladding

The right cladding depends mainly on the site: visual identity, expected security level, maintenance tolerance, and budget.

Bosquet wooden bike shelter

Wood

A warm look to integrate the bike shelter into an office, school, residence, or landscaped area.

Rachais metal bike shelter

Perforated metal

A robust, durable option for sites that want a contemporary bike shelter, customizable by pattern or color.

Neve bike shelter with glass cladding

Glass

A bright, discreet cladding for architectural projects, lobbies, headquarters, and visible facades.

Optimal mesh bike shelter

Mesh

A simple, economical way to enclose a bike area while keeping visibility over the parking space.

Avoid

Plexiglass or overly light plastic roofs: they age poorly, scratch, become cloudy, and can break.

Green roof

Useful when landscape integration matters. See the green roof.

Solar

Relevant when grid connection is complex or for charging e-bikes. See the solar kit.

Most important: choose the cladding after validating capacity, racks, security level, and site constraints.

Budget

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Bike Shelters

Practical answers to help you size, secure, and deploy your bike parking solution.

An open bike shelter (or covered bike shelter) protects bikes from weather (rain, sun, wind) but remains freely accessible. An enclosed bike shelter (also called a bike storage room or bike locker) adds access control (key, badge, keypad, or ByApp) to prevent theft. Enclosed bike parking is recommended for high-value e-bikes. Compare shelter types.

It depends on surface area. For an outdoor bike shelter under 5 m², no formalities are required. Between 5 and 20 m², a prior declaration suffices. Above 20 m², a building permit is mandatory. See our complete guide to administrative procedures.

Optimal capacity depends on number of users, target cycling mode share, and peak usage (e.g., morning arrivals). In practice, sizing “to the minimum” is rarely advisable: it’s better to include room for growth than to reach full capacity within six months. Share your headcount, available space, and bike types (e-bikes/cargo bikes), and we’ll propose 2–3 tailored scenarios. Request a Custom Quote.

For wooden bike shelters, we offer two premium species: Thermowood (thermally modified pine—highly durable, rich brown finish) on the Bosquet model, and Douglas Fir (naturally rot-resistant, light-toned finish) on the Jungle model. Both carry a minimum 5-year warranty. See our wooden bike shelter comparison guide.

For in-stock shelters, delivery is fast: within a few weeks. For custom or bulk orders, allow 5 to 8 weeks. Installation is performed by our teams or certified partners. Contact us for current availability.

Yes: design + manufacturing + delivery + installation. We also handle site constraints (access, utilities, slope, foundations if needed). You retain a dedicated account manager. View Our Projects.

Most common issues:
• Ground incompatible with anchoring (thin asphalt, unstable pavers),
• Limited vehicle access or delivery clearance,
• Slope, underground utilities, or water drainage.

Send us a site plan plus 2–3 photos—we’ll quickly identify what’s straightforward and what requires prep. Send Us Your Details.

Yes—either via built-in outlets integrated into certain equipment, or through dedicated charging solutions. Key point: avoid unsafe “multi-outlet” setups (cables on the ground, unprotected outlets). Sizing depends on the share of e-bikes and actual usage patterns (day-use vs. long-term parking). Browse our charging accessories.

Effective security = visible location + lighting + frame-anchoring points + (if needed) access control. A closed shelter without proper bike supports is still a poor parking solution. Explore our secure shelters.

Yes—several funding options exist depending on your situation: the Green Fund for local authorities, regional grants (e.g., Bourgogne-Franche-Comté up to 80%), and co-ownership subsidies in Paris (up to 50%). The Alvéole Plus program has ended, but other schemes remain active. See our 2026 Subsidy Guide for full details.

For a secure e-bike shelter, choose a closed shelter with access control. Add robust bike racks to anchor both frames and wheels. For charging, our solar charging kit provides lighting and e-bike outlets without grid connection. Outdoor charging lockers also protect batteries.
