Bike Shelters
They chose a bike shelter by ByCommute
Open or closed bike shelter: which one is right for you?
Two approaches, depending on your priorities: weather protection or enhanced security.
Steel vs. Wood vs. Glass: Which material should you choose?
Each finish has its advantages: durability of galvanized steel, warm aesthetic of wood (Thermowood, Douglas), modern design of glass. Discover our comparative guide to help you choose.
How many bikes fit in an outdoor bike shelter?
Estimates based on length. For enclosed shelters, depth (3–4 m or 6 m) also affects capacity.
| Length |
Single-tier (U-shaped racks) |
Double-tier (double-tier rack) |
|---|---|---|
| 4 m | 8–10 bikes | 16–20 bikes |
| 5 m | 12–14 bikes | 24–28 bikes |
| 6 ft | 16–18 bikes | 32–36 bikes |
| 8 m | 24–26 bikes | 48–52 bikes |
For enclosed bike shelters, a 6 m depth doubles capacity (bikes stored on both sides).

Frequently asked questions about bike shelters
An open bike shelter (or covered bike shelter) protects bikes from weather (rain, sun, wind) but remains freely accessible. An enclosed bike shelter (also called bike storage room or bike locker) adds access control (key, badge, keypad, ByApp) to prevent theft. Enclosed bike parking is recommended for high-value e-bikes.
It depends on surface area. No formalities are required for an outdoor bike shelter under 5 m². A prior declaration suffices for 5–20 m². A full building permit is required beyond 20 m². See our complete administrative procedures guide.
For a wooden bike shelter, we offer two wood species: Thermowood (thermally treated pine—highly durable, brown finish) on the Bike Shelters model, and Douglas fir (naturally rot-resistant, light-colored finish) on the Bike Shelters model. Both are guaranteed for a minimum of 5 years. See our wooden bike shelter comparison guide.
Yes—several funding options exist depending on your situation: the Green Fund for local authorities, regional grants (e.g., Bourgogne-Franche-Comté up to 80%), and co-ownership subsidies in Paris (up to 50%). The Alvéole Plus program has ended, but other schemes remain available. See our 2026 Subsidy Guide.
For in-stock shelters, delivery is fast: within a few weeks. For custom or bulk orders, allow 5–8 weeks. Installation is performed by our team or our certified partners. Contact us to check availability.
For a secure e-bike shelter, choose a closed shelter with access control. Add robust bike racks to lock both frame and wheel. For charging, our solar kit provides lighting and e-bike outlets—no electrical connection required. Our charging lockers also protect batteries.
